WHAT IS THE WORKSHOP ABOUT?

In the ever-evolving cinema & content landscape, it's easy to lose sense of why film matters in the first place. As cinema is threatened by short attention spans, AI videos and algorithm-dictated productions, we attempt to shift the focus back on the purpose of cinema. Film Appreciation is the art and discipline of studying & analysing films, assessing their relationship with us, and their impact on society with deep honesty and curiosity. Whether you're a filmmaker, screenwriter, actor, or a young artist hoping to build a career in cinema, we strongly urge you attend this workshop. And even if you're simply someone who loves watching and talking about films, you'll enjoy this workshop equally, or maybe even more.

Cinema is one of the most powerful storytelling mediums, and understanding it can sharpen how you observe, interpret, and communicate ideas. Whether you work in business, design, writing, marketing, or any other field, learning how films use visuals, sound, and narrative can deepen your creative thinking and storytelling skills.

In this Film Appreciation Workshop, you’ll explore the art of analysing films through both a technical and socio-political lens. We’ll dive into film history, cinema’s relationship with society and politics, and the different components that come together to create a film. We'll study cinema through a wide range of films - from French New Wave to Modern Malayalam Cinema, from American Independent Films to Mainstream Bollywood. From Vittoria de Sica to Farah Khan, you'll find examples of all schools of filmmaking.

The workshop will help you learn how to read films beyond what appears on the surface. Understanding why certain creative choices are made and how filmmaking tools like cinematography, sound, editing, and performance shape the overall experience of a film, and how those choices consciously or subconsciously interact with us.

WHEN & WHERE IS THE WORKSHOP?

This is a 2-day Film Appreciation Workshop in Mumbai, happening on 4th & 5th April (Saturday–Sunday) at Creator's Shoot Spot by Frizzon Production in Andheri East.

WHAT DO YOU LEARN FROM THE COURSE?

Through this workshop, we aim to help you:

  • Understand the core theories and concepts in Film Studies, giving you the tools to analyse films from across the world and articulate your interpretations with clarity and depth. You’ll learn how to move beyond simply “liking” or “disliking” a film and instead engage with it critically.
  • Explore the major film movements in the history of cinema, from different countries and time periods, while understanding the social, political, and cultural forces that shaped them. This will help you see cinema not just as entertainment, but as a reflection of society.
  • Study landmark films from world cinema and examine how influential filmmakers approached storytelling, form, and style. Along the way, you’ll also be introduced to the ideas and writings of important film scholars and critics who shaped the field of Film Studies.
  • Break down the craft of filmmaking, including cinematography, editing, sound design, production design, performance, and narrative structure. You’ll understand how these different elements work together to create meaning, emotion, and atmosphere in a film.
  • Develop the ability to “read” films more deeply, recognising symbolism, themes, visual language, and creative choices that may not be immediately obvious to a casual viewer.
  • Participate in discussions and collective film analysis, where you’ll learn how to express your ideas about cinema, listen to different interpretations, and engage with films from multiple perspectives.
  • Discover pathways to pursue your interest in cinema further, whether through writing, criticism, filmmaking, academic study, or simply developing a richer and more informed relationship with the films you watch.

WHAT ELSE IS IN STORE?

This workshop is designed to give you a solid foundation in film studies and critical analysis of cinema. You’ll get thoughtfully prepared study material breaking down key workshop concepts, along with a curated list of must-watch films and series and guidance on how to study them. We’ll also discuss how you can deepen your engagement with cinema beyond the workshop from developing your own voice as a viewer and critic to exploring different ways of participating in the film ecosystem, including writing about films, film programming, research, and other creative avenues within the world of cinema.
