The Fundamentals of Cinematography :
Understand what cinematography really is beyond just “beautiful visuals”, and why it plays a critical role in storytelling. We'll break it down simply: how shots are planned, composed, and captured to guide emotion and meaning.
Camera Basics & Evolution: Learn about different types of cameras, how they work, and how they've evolved from early film cameras to today's digital setups. You'll understand frame rates, resolutions, lens types, and how these choices shape the final image.
Lighting & Exposure: Explore how lighting changes everything from mood to meaning. We’ll discuss the basics of natural and artificial lighting, practical light setups, and how filmmakers use exposure, colour tones, and shadows to tell stories visually.
Composition & Framing: What makes a shot memorable? We’ll decode the visual grammar of film, rule of thirds, leading lines, negative space, different shot types and how these tools shape what we feel and notice in a scene.
Camera Movement & Setups: Dive into how movement can elevate storytelling. From static shots to handheld chaos, we’ll look at how filmmakers use tools like tripods, gimbals, and cranes to guide our eyes and emotions.
Understanding Lenses: Why do some scenes feel dreamy while others feel intense? We’ll explore focal lengths, zoom vs prime lenses, and how your lens choice dramatically affects the perspective and tone of your shots.
Basics of Audio in Cinematography: Often overlooked, sound plays a huge role in the impact of visuals. Learn how microphones are used, the importance of on-set audio, and how sound enhances the emotional texture of a scene.
Cinematography & Production Design: Understand how camera work interacts with sets, props, costumes, and actor movement. We’ll discuss blocking, staging, and how the world within the frame is constructed intentionally.
Scene Breakdown: Learn to break down a scene like a filmmaker identifying shot types, emotional cues, and visual language. Then storyboard your own scene using only visuals to convey mood, character, and story.
By the end of the workshop, you’ll not only have a solid grasp on cinematography but also the confidence to watch films more critically, discuss them more deeply, and maybe even create with more intention.
This workshop is not just a two-day crash course, it’s your entry point into the larger world of cinema.
You’ll receive carefully curated study material designed to be your beginner-friendly guide to cinematography and cinema. It’ll cover key concepts we explore in the workshop, simplified explanations for deeper understanding, plus a watchlist of essential films from around the world along with tips on how and where to access them.
We’ll also touch on what it means to pursue cinematography professionally, how to get started, build a portfolio, and find your unique voice. And for those curious about other paths, we’ll talk about different roles in the movie industry from producers and financiers to filmmakers and creative collaborators.
